Accident Last Wednesday Proves Fatal to Peter H. Wedel

An unusual accident at Elyria, Kansas, at about three o'clock last Wednesday, May 27, claimed the life of Peter H. Wedel of Galva. Together with a group of other men, Mr. Wedel was unloading a carload of parts for the electric high line which is now being build in the Elyria neighborhood.

Being dislodged from their position on the car, several posts began rolling and one of them caught Mr. Wedel unexpectly [sic] as it struck the ground. He was badly crushed and died at the McPherson county hospital after two hours of intense suffering.

Funeral services were held at the Emmanuel Mennonite church last Sunday.

Peter H. Wedel

Peter H. Wedel, son of Henry P. and Karolina (Unruh) Wedel, was born on January 7, 1895, near Moundridge, Kansas, where he grew to manhood. He received a Christian education and was baptized with a class of nine converts on July 20, 1913, by the Rev. H. R. Voth, and joined the Canton, now the Emmanuel Mennonite Church, of which he was a member at the time of his death. He joined in holy matrimony with Mable [sic Mabel] Koehn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Koehn on January 2, 1921. Rev. F. t. Wedel performed the marriage ceremony.

To this union one daughter, Lillian Pearl, was born. they lived at various places in Kansas and the last seven years they have lived in Galva, Kans. During the year of depression he had to do all kinds of work to make a living for himself and his family. He was always glad to get work and must have been a very faithful and willing worker, always ready to do his part. On Wednesday, May 27, he and a number of workers were to unload a flat carload of posts for the McPherson Electric high line at Elyria, Kansas. These long posts started to roll and caught Pete unaware. He was bruised so badly that he died two hours later, at about five o'clock, at the McPherson County Hospital.

He leaves to mourn his untimely death his dear wife, Mable [sic Mabel], and their only daughter, Lillian Pearl, 14 years old; his mother; his wife's parents; 4 brothers, Dan and Andrew of Moundridge; John at McPherson; and Edwin of Hutchinson; 5 sisters, Emilia at home with her mother; Carrie (Mrs. Will Fast), Malinda (Mrs. John Wedel) Moundridge; Alvina (Mrs. Henry Koehn) and Lena (Mrs. Hilda Wedel) McPherson, Kansas, a number of close relatives and host of friends. His father preceded him in death less than a year ago. He reached the age of 41 years, 4 months and 20 days.

Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon, May 31, 1936, at the Emmanuel Mennonite church seven miles south of Galva, Kansas, where the body was laid to rest in the church cemetery. Many had come to show their respects for the departed. Rev. J. J. Ratzlaff, Elder of the church, and Rev. P. P. Wedel of Moundridge officiated. A men's octet sang several comforting hymns.

Expression of Thanks.

We wish to thank the many friends for their help and sympathy during the accident and death of our dear husband and father. Also for the beautiful floral offerings and the music rendered. — Mrs. Pete H. Wedel and Lillian.
