Henry P. Wedel

Henry P. Wedel, son of Pete H. and Maria (Koehn) Wedel, was born August 13, 1864, in South Russia, in the village of Antanofka. In the year 1874 he, with his parents and their family, came to America as a 10 year old boy and grew to manhood at the home near the then Canton, and now Emanuel church, six miles north of Moundridge. Here he received his education, mostly in German, and was instructed in the word of God, so that on march 6th, 1881, he was baptized by the Elder Johann Ratzlaff, and became a member in the church. He was a member of this church at the time of his death.

On December 7, 1883, he united in holy matrimony with Caroline Unruh, who has been his life companion and with whom he shared joy and sorrow for 51 years and 7 months.

This union was blessed with 12 children, two dying in their infancy. The 10 who are living are, Dan H. of Halstead; Amelia, at home; Caroline, (Mrs. Will Fast) Moundridge; Andrew H., Moundridge; John H. P., Galva; Peter H., Galva; Levina (Mrs. Henry Koehn) Galva; Edward H., Hutchinson; Melinda (Mrs. John Wedel) Moundridge; Lena, (Mrs. Hilkie Wedel), McPherson.

He was a father who loved his family and was greatly concerned about their living for eternity.

On December 7, 1933, the family quietly celebrated the golden anniversary of the parents' wedding at the home. Since January 1935, he began to fail in health and had many hard attacks of sickness. On July 8 he was taken very ill and was removed to the Bethel Hospital, where on July 10, about eleven o'clock in the morning, he quietly passed away.

He leaves to mourn his departure his dear wife; 10 children with their families; 19 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; 2 brothers, A. P. Wedel, Reedley, Calif.; and J. P. Wedel, Portland, Oregon; and a host of relatives and friends. He attained the age of 70 years, 10 months and 25 days.

Funeral services were held Sunday morning July 14th, from the Emanuel church; and was buried at the church's cemetery.

Rev. P. K. Regier, from the West Zion Church, Moundridge, Kansas, and Rev. J. J. Ratzlaff, pastor of the church officiating.

A mixed quartet, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Dalke, Ruth Wedell and Roy Unruh, rendered a number of familiar songs.
