Andrew J. Waltner, jüngster Sohn von John und Marie Krehbiel Waltner, ward am 19. Januar, 1877, zu Yankton, S. D. geboren. Er besuchte die Volksschule und studierte dann in Yankton College und der Bethel Academy, Newton, Kansas, weiter. Am 5. Juni, 1892 ward er von Aelt Chr. Kaufman getauft und Glied der Salem Mennonitengemeinde. 1902 schloß er sich der Bethanien Gemeinde in Freeman an und blieb da treues Glied. Am 16. Oktober, 1898, heiratete er Katharina Wedel zu Moundridge, Kansas, und es wurden ihnen 5 Kinder geschenkt. Drei Jahre wohnten sie bei Moundridge, dann zogen sie nach Freeman wo der Heimgerufene als Geschäftsmann in Land, Versicherung und Bank tätig war. Die letzten 7 Jahre war er Feldvertreter der J. V. Lauer Grain Co. von Milwaukee, Wisc. in den Staaten Iowa, Wisconsin, minnesota und S. Dakota. Er erfreute sich stets guter Gesundheit bis er am 17. Juli erkrankte und schon am 27. Juli im Alter von 67 J. 6 M. und 8 Tagen starb. Es trauern um ihn seine Gattin, 1 Tochter Edna, Frau Oscar Gering, Freeman; Sohn Richard, Freeman; Sohn Clarence, San Diego, Calif.; John D., New Guinea; und Sohn Raymond, Ft. Benning, Georgia, 2 Schwestern, 2 Brüder und viele Freunde.

WELL KNOWN FREEMAN, S. D. BUSINESSMAN CALLED AWAY IN DEATH

Freeman, South Dakota. — Funeral services were held here last week for A. J. Waltner, local business man, who passed away Thursday morning, July 27, 1944. Mr. Waltner was always in excellent health, but became sick on July 17 and died on July 27, after a serious illness of one week due to a heart ailment.

The funeral services were in charge of Rev. Louis Linscheid of the Bethany Mennonite church, assisted by Rev. Willard Klaasen and Rev. J. J. Regier. Two children, Edna (Mrs. Oscar Gering) and Richard live in Freeman. Two sons, Clarence of San Diego, California, and John O., who is Director of Personnel for the American Red Cross in New Guinea, could not be present at the funeral. The youngest son, Raymond, arrived from Ft. Benning, Georgia, a few days before the death of his father.

Mr. Waltner was active and interested in all civic and state activities, having served as Republican representative to the state legislature for several terms. He was engaged in real estate, banking and insurance during the past years, but for the last seven years was field representative in Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota for the J. V. Laner [sic Lauer] Grain Co. of Milwaukee.

Surviving are, his wife, one daughter and four sons, three daughters-in-law, one son-in-law and seven grandchildren. He reached the age of 67 years, 5 months and 8 days.

ANDREW J. WALTNER

Andrew J. Waltner, youngest son of John and Maria Krehbiel Waltner, was born in Yankton county, S. D., on Jan 19, 1877. After attending rural school, he continued his education at Yankton college and Academy and at Bethel College, Newton, Kansas.

He was baptized on Junw 5, 1892, by Rev. Christian Kaufman and was a member of the Salem Mennonite church until he transferred his membership to the Bethany Mennonite church in Freeman in 1902, where he has been a faithful member.

On Oct. 18, 11898 he was married to Katharina Wedel at Moundridge, Kansas, to which union was born five children. After living in Moundridge for three and a half years, the family moved to Freeman, S. D., where Mr. Waltner was engaged in real estate, banking and insurance. For the past seven years he was field representative for the J. V. Lauer Grain Co. of Milwaukee, Wis. — in Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota and S. D.

He was always in excellent health, but on July17 he became sick. He died peacefully on Thursday morning, July 27, after a serious illness of one week due to heart ailment, having reached the age of a67 years, six months and 8 days.

He leaves to mourn his departure his beloved wife, one daughter Edna (Mrs. Oscar Gering, Freeman) four sons Richard (Freeman) Clarence (San Diego, Calif) John O. (New Guinea) and Raymond (Ft. Benning, Georgia) three daughters-in-law, one son-in-law, seven grandchildren, two sisters, two brothers, three sisters-in-law, and many relatives and friends.

The Bethany Women's Mission Society has contributed $5.00 as a memorial wreath to be given to missions in memory of A. J. Waltner, since Mrs. Waltner is an active member of this society.
