Peter H. Unruh

Friday morning August 3, 1928, the sad news became known that Peter H. Unruh had passed away to the great beyond at his home southeast of Goessel, Kan., at the age of 73 years, 1 month and 9 days.

The deceased was born June 4th 1855 in the village of Karolswaldo, Russia, where he grew to manhood and upon confession of his faith was baptized on December 22, 1872 by Rev. Tobias Unruh and thus became a member of the Mennonite Church of that place. In the 70's he and his partners immigrated to America and settled on a farm south east of Newton, Kan., experiencing the hardships of early pioneer life.

Later in the year 1880, May 12, he found a life's companion in Julina Siebert, of Pawnee Rock, Kan., who shared with him joys and sorrows until death claimed her July 18, 1899. After their wedding they made their home on a farm 2½ miles southeast of Goessel where he has resided continuously. Soon after this time they joined the Alexanderwohl church and in the year 1910 he transferred his membership by letter to the Tabor Church. To this union were born 5 sons, one dying in infancy.

Feeling the need of a mother for his children he on June 24, 1900 married Anna Harms of Elbing, Kans., who tried to fulfill her duties faithfully. this union was blessed with 2 children which died when still young.

Since the deceased suffered with hardening of the arteries, high blood pressure, and finally complications of Bright's disease and Dropsy.

Those left to mourn his departure are his beloved wife, 4 sons: Abr. P. Unruh, Moundridge; Isaac Unruh and Ed Unruh, of Goessel; Jacob Unruh, Newton; 8 grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Tabor Church August 5th being conducted by Rev. P. H. Unruh and assisted by Rev. Peter Buller, both of whose texts were well chosen and whose words were consoling.

The music rendered by a quartet was sweet and touching. Interment was made in the Tabor cemetery.
