Bernard H. Unruh

Bernard H. Unruh, son of Heinrich and Susanna Unruh, was born April 16, 1845 in Antonowka, Kreis Ostrog, Russia. In 1864 he was baptized upon the confession of his faith by elder Tobias Unruh, December 25, 1874 he was with his parents immigrated to America and arrived at Great Bend, Kansas. A year later they moved to Alexanderwohl where they lived in the house erected for immigrants until spring. On May 15, 1876 he went with his parents to lone Tree Township, McPherson County, where his parents made settlement on a farm. Here he joined the Canton Congregation, of which Church he was a faithful member.

June 8, 1879 he was united in holy wedlock with Elizabeth Wedel, with whom he shared the joys and sorrows of life for 36 years. His wife preceded him in death in 1915 and he spent the past 14 years of his life alone as a widower.

In 1880 he with his wife settled upon a farm in Lone Tree Township. After 10 years they came to Moundridge where he joined the West Zion Mennonite Church in 1891.

Funeral services were held at the West Zion Church Sunday afternoon, Jan 27, with Rev. P. K. Regier in charge. He was assisted by Rev. C. E. Hirschler who delivered a message in the German language. Interment was made in the West Zion Church Cemetery. — Moundridge Journal.
