John Schrag, son of Jacob and Katharina Schrag, was born on the 21 of November, 1848 in the colony of Edwards Dorf, Wolhinien, Russia. In Early youth he was baptized upon confession of faith by his Elder John Schrag in the year 1866 and became a member of the resident Mennonite Church there.
November 17, 1871 he married Miss Anna Schrag. And shortly after, in 1874 he came with the large Mennonite Immigration group to America. He established a pioneer home in the state of South Dakota where he also joined the Zion Church at that place.
In 1882 he came to Kansas to found a home and settled near the vicinity of Moundridge. Here he became connected with the Christian Mennonite Church of Moundridge and transferred his membership and joined the Church in 1883.
However in the later years of his life he attended largely the Eden Mennonite Church whose faithful membership he remained until his death.
The pioneer life was also very difficult and conttained [sic] many hardships. But the Lord blessed him and his family.
This union was blessed with 14 children of whom 7 have passed into the beyond in early infancy. One grown boy by the name of William went to his reward January, 1918. His faithful wife and mother passed to her reward the 10th of May 1928.
Only within the last few weeks he became ill. He was given the best of hospital care and doctors supervision but beyond all aid given, his life ebbed away on March 31, 1930. He reached the age of 81 years, 4 months and 10 days. He leaves to mourn 3 sons and 3 daughter, three son-in-law and two daughters-in-law, 44 grandchildren, one brother and two sisters and many friends and relatives to mourn his sudden departure.
Funeral services were conducted from the home of Mr. Valentine Stucky and from the Eden Mennonite Church, April 2, 1930. Interment was made in the Eden cemetery. — Moundridge Journal.
