Edna Rella Schrag

Edna Rella Schrag was born at Pretty Prairie, Kansas, on Oct. 2, 1912. After residing there three years the family removed to Copeland, Kansas, and subsequently moved to Kingman, Kansas where the deceased made her home until her death.

On June 5, 1927, she was baptized on confession of her faith by the Rev. Solomon Mouttet and accepted into the membership of the Mennonite church of which body she remained a faithful member until her death.

Her youth was spent on the arm with her parents and in school. She graduated from Kingman high school in 1931 and soon thereafter entered Bethel College and prepared herself for the teaching profession.

The past year she taught Coleman school, in her home district and looked hopefully toward her approaching second school term at this place, but God's plan was different with her.

About one week ago while attending Bethel College summer school, she became ill and an appendicitis operation was performed. her condition was one of somewhat slow improvement, but we expected her to recover soon. On the day preceding her death, the attending physician pronounced her condition satisfactory. But the sudden turn of her condition then, has turned our fondest hopes into stark tragedy.

In her final hours she was conscious of her approaching demise, and expressed the wish to be with the Lord and to meet again all her loved ones there.

She died July 29, 1936.

She leaves her mother, four sisters, Mrs. J. L. Goering, Mrs. Menno Voth, Cora and Vera and there [sic] brothers Marvin, Ralph and Elmer, who treasure her memory.

Soon after her father's death in October 1932, she wrote the following poem, and we bring it here as a tribute to her memory:

Even though the sea seems stormy
Even though the billows roar
If we put our trust in Jesus
He will guide us safe to shore

He'll go with us, share our heartaches
He'll take part in our deep grief
There is light beyond the shadows
And our life on earth is brief.

Tho' sometimes our days are lonely
And we long for loved ones there
Who are waiting for our coming
Beckoning us to heaven so fair.

Where there'll be no disappointments
Where clouds will never hide the sun
Where there'll be no pain or sorrow
And no tearful farewells sung.

Yet a little while to linger
Till he calls us from afar
And we'll all meet there in Jesus
When we too have crossed the bar!
