Peter P. Schmidt ward geboren am 21. Jan., 1860 im Dorfe Kleefeld, Süd Rußland. 1875 kam er mit seinen Eltern Peter und Margaretha Berg Schmidt nach McPerson [sic McPherson] Co., Kansas. Da hat er mit ihnen die schweren Pionier Jahre durchgemacht. Am 15. Aug 1880 wurde er vom Aeltesten Jakob Buller getauft und Glied der Alexanderwohl Gemeinde an deren Gedeihen er regen Anteil nahm bis an sein Ende. Nach seiner Ehe mit Helena Voth am 4 Januar, 1883 machten sie ihr Heim in Marion Co., Kansas. 1933 feierten sie ihre goldene Hochzeit und neulich ward das 59ste Jahr ihrer Heirat vollendet. Kinder wurden ihnen 10 geboren: Mrs. Margaretha Schroeder, Miss Maria Schmidt noch im Heim, Mrs. Elizabeth Schmidt, Karl Schmidt , Adolf Schmidt, Mrs. Helena Schmidt, Mrs. Anna Goertz, Mrs. Emma Duerksen, John Schmidt noch im Heim und Theodor Schmidt. Großvater wurde er über 32 Großkindern von denen 4 gestorben sind, und über vier Kinder wurde er Urgroßvater. In letzter Zeit fing er an recht leidend zu werden, trug es aber geduldig, und half mit wo er konnte bis zum letzten Tage. Am 6. Januar 8:15 abends als er am Tische saß und las erhielt er einen Schlaganfall, welches seine linke Seite lähmte. Er wurde sofort ins Bethesda Hospital gebracht wo er nach 1 ¼ Tagen schweren Leidens fast plötzlich doch sanft im Herrn entschlief um 2 Uhr morgens am 8. Jan. 1942. Nun ruht er. Er ist alt geworden 81 Jahre, 11 Monate und 18 Tage. Es überleben ihn nebst Gattin und allen 10 Kindern, 5 Schwiegersöhne, 3 Schwiegertöchter, eine Schwester, Mrs. P. J. Unruh und viele Freunde. Gesegnet mit guter Gesundheit und ausgestattet mit gewissenhafter Natur, geriet ihm seine Arbeit meistens wohl. Da er stiller und friedlicher Gesinnung war machte er nicht viele Worte, war uns aber um so mehr mit seinem Wandel ein Vorbild in der Gottesfurcht, Pünktlichkeit und Aufrichtigkeit. Mission, Wohltätigkeit und Erziehung lagen ihm nahe am Herzen. Um das Seelenheil der Seinen und daß doch keins möchte dahinten bleiben flehte er oft und viel. Sein Andenken bleibt im Segen. Als bei der lieben Mutter Krankenbett vor Weihnachten er und die Kinder sangen legte er besonders Gewicht auf diese Verse:

Die Erd ist mir ein morsches Boot
Das unter mir zu sinken droht;
Ich steh’ nach oben hin gewandt
Mit einem Fuß auf seinem Rand.

Gebeut’st Du, Herr, mit einem Blick
So schleuder’ ich’s hinter mir zurück,
Und schwinge mich an Deiner Hand
Hinauf, hinauf — und jauchze: “Land”!

Das Begräbnis wurde in der Alexanderwohl Kirche abgehalten. Trostreden hielten Rev. J. F. Moyer, Ps. 90, 12, englisch, und Rev. P. H. Unruh 2 Kor. 5, 4, deutsch. Rev. C. C. Wedel hielt das Schlußgebet. Ein Quartett sang “Herr bleib bei mir” und “Selig in Jesu Armen”.

— P. P. Schmidt of the Hochfeld neighborhood at Goessel died Thursday, Jan. 8, at the Bethesda Hospital. He was 80 years old, — one of the pioneers who helped build up the community and church since the first Mennonite immigrants came to this part of the sate. He is survived by his aged wife and many relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the Alexanderwohl church, of which he was a member.

Peter P. Schmidt

Peter P. Schmidt was born January 21, 1860, in the village of Kleefeld, South Russia. In 1875 he came with his parents, to the United States of America where they settled in the eastern part of McPherson co9unty, Kansas. with them he went through the hard experiences of pioneer life.

He was baptized August 15, 1880, by the Elder Jacob Buller and joined the Alexanderwohl Mennonite church, in which he held active membership until his death.

After his marriage to Helena Voth on January 4, 1883, they made their home in Marion county, Kansas.

In 1933 they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary and Sunday, January 4, completed their 59th year of wedded life, sharing life's joys and sorrows together.

There were ten children born to them. They are: Mrs. Margaret Schroeder, Miss Mary Schmidt, Mrs. Elizabeth Schmidt, Karl Schmidt, Adolf Schmidt, Mrs. Helena Schmidt, Mrs. Anna Goertz, Mrs. Emma Duerksen, John Schmidt and Theodore Schmidt.

He was grandfather to 32 grandchildren of which four preceded him in death, and great-grandfather to four great-grandchildren.

Lately he began to complain more of failing health, but was patient in suffering and helped on the farm in many little things even to the last day.

On January 6, 1942, he suffered a stroke while he was sitting at the table and reading. His left side was completely paralyzed and he was speechless. This was his first and last serious illness. He was immediately transferred to the Bethesda Hospital where, after 1¼ days of intense suffering, he gently and almost suddenly at 2:15 A.M. Thursday, January 8, was called to be with the Lord. Now he is at rest. He reached the age of 81 years, 11 months and 18 days.

He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, all ten children, five sons-in-law, 3 daughters-in-law, one sister, Mrs. P. J. Unruh and many friends.

Blessed with good health and a conscientious nature, his labors were generally well rewarded. As he led a quiet life and had a peaceful disposition and was not a man of many words, his daily life was all the more an example of his piety, punctuality and righteousness. Missions, relief and education were a burden on his heart. The salvation of his household was his concern and that not one would be missing gave him repeated cause for prayer. He is remembered by all who knew him as one whose life was a blessing to others.
