FOUR INJURED IN AUTO ACCIDENT LAST SUNDAY

The Herman F. and Gus F. Schmidt families of Hutchinson met with a tragic automobile accident about nine miles west of Newton last Sunday evening when the Chevrolet sedan in which they were driving crashed into the rear of a stalled Colorado gasoline transport truck. Herman Schmidt was killed almost instantly, while his brother Gus, who was the driver escaped with serious injuries, the outcome of which is still uncertain at this date.

The two men were accompanied by their wives and two sons. Mrs. Herman Schmidt suffered a compound fracture of one leg, and Mrs. Gus Schmidt a broken arm. The two sons escaped with slight bruises and cuts.

The Schmidt families were returning home to Hutchinson after having spent the Sunday afternoon visiting relatives at Goessel. According to witnesses, the accident happened shortly after seven o'clock. So terrific was the impact of the crash that the right side of the sedan was almost completely torn away. The body of Herman Schmidt, who was sitting beside his brother, was badly mangled. The drivers of the transport truck, which had apparently stopped partly on the pavement, stated that they had not had enough time to place warning lights around the truck before the crash occurred. Officers are investigating the circumstances connected with the accident.

The body of Mr. Schmidt was brought to the Moody Funeral home in Newton, in preparation for the funeral which is to be held at the Alexanderwohl church Sunday afternoon. His father, Jacob R. Schmidt resides at Goessel, while one sister, Mrs. D. G. Klassen lives in Newton. He was 47 years of age.
