Helena Schilling

Helena Schilling, nee Wolf, was born on March 10, 1856, at Ladekop, West Prussia, Germany. With her parents she immigrated into southern Russia, where after the death of her mother she found a home with the family Henry Franz. In 1879 she came to America with her foster parents and endured the hardships and trials of pioneer life in the early days. She was baptized upon the confession of her faith and accepted as a member into the Alexanderwohl Mennonite church.

On January 15, 1889, she was united in holy wedlock to her husband, Herman Schilling and for 45 years, 6 months and 22 days they shared life's joys and sorrows. To this union 7 children were born, 2 sons and 5 daughters; one son and three daughters preceded her in death.

During the last five years she had been more or less afflicted. Recently her sickness increased in such a way that she was taken to the hospital at Goessel, where after four weeks of tender care she succumbed to the disease. She was ready and willing and often expressed her desire to go and be with her Saviour. Her wish was fulfilled Monday afternoon, August 8, 1934, at 3:30 when she quietly and peacefully passed away. Very likely the extreme heat of these days hastened her death. She was the last of her immediate family. She attained the age of 78 years, 4 months and 27 days.

She leaves to mourn her passing her deeply bereaved husband, one son, 2 daughters, 1 grandfather, 1 foster brother, besides other relatives and a host of friends. She has been a faithful, loving mother and wife, continually standing by her family in a loving way. She trusted fully in the grace of the Lord and departed in the faith in her Saviour to be forever with him from now on.

Funeral services were held from the home near Hesston and from the First Mennonite church of Christian at Moundridge on Friday afternoon, August 10, with Rev. P. P. Wedel, pastor of the church, in charge, assisted by Rev. P. P. Buller of Goessel. Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Mrs. Ray Schowalter, Emma Stucky, Christian Boering, and John D. Voth with Fern Johnson accompanying at the piano. Pallbearers were Wm. Dunkelburger, H. H. Voth, J. M Goossen, George Goossen, Frank Goossen and Arnold Nickle. Interment was made in the church cemetery.
