Paul Mantei was born in South Russia on June 8, 1848. He was brought up and instructed in the Christian faith in accord with the tenets of the Lutheran Church. In 1879 he was married to Emielle [sic Emilia] Wiese the now bereaved widow, with whom he lived in matrimony for 57 years in Kansas. In 1914 they came to Monroe Wash., where they lived till now.
The deceased loved the Lord and His word. He attended the place of worship as often as possible. Greater portions of Scripture he could recite from memory, also a number of choice hymns of which he wished that three be sung at his funeral. Those three are: "Nearer My God to Thee", "Es geht nach Haus", and Lasz mich geben".
He arrived, by the Grace of God, at the age of 88 yrs. He leaves to mourn his bereaved widow, one son, August Mantei of Monroe; three daughters, Mrs. Pauline Schwartz, Mrs. Julia Flickner of Monroe, and Mrs. Lena Rheinholz of Berkley, Calif.; 21 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren and a great host of friends to mourn his departure. Funeral services were held at the Mennonite church at which S. S. Baumgartner spoke words of comfort in the English and German language on Ps. 16, 11 and Luke 24, 29.
Mr. Mantel had resided in Monroe 22 years.
