Daniel Krehbiel

Daniel Krehbiel, son of Christian and Magdalene Dester Krehbiel, was born in Bavaria, Germany, July 10, 1867. Here he received his elementary and college training. The family came to the United States in 1881, lived in the state of Illinois two years, and 8 years in Kansas, coming to the state of Washington in 1891 and settling in Adams Co. near Lind.

In 1882 he was baptized upon his confession of faith and united with the Mennonite church. Coming to the state of Washington, he experienced the rigors and hardships of pioneer life. He saw the development of this country practically from its beginning. The summer months were spent at home on the farm. During winter months work was sought in other parts of eastern Washington to earn sufficient for a living for the family. He homesteaded on a farm 4 miles northeast of Lind.

In 1900 he united with the Menno Mennonite church. On Dec. 21, 1901, he was united in marriage to Maria May Schrag. The Lord blessed this union with 8 children, all living to this day. He continued farming till 1907 when he moved his family to Lind and entered into business with the Lind Hardware Co. Two years later he severed his connections with this firm and entered the real estate and insurance business in which he has since been engaged. Since 1926 he was a member of the firm of Krehbiel and Brittenham. He was greatly interested in the affairs and welfare of the community and devoted very much of his time in this direction, being of help to many a person.

Since 1929 he has served as mayor of the town of Lind, having also served two terms previously. During this time devoted service was rendered to the town and the surrounding community. During his many years as a member of the Menno Mennonite church he also served 20 years as a deacon. The passing of his devoted wife, a faithful and true mother to his children, was a severe blow to him on July 20, 1928. For some time he has been ailing but without a word of complaint. With the exception of a few days and some times a week at a time when his ailment would not permit him to be in his office, he always continued his regular work. Even when confined to his bed, or to the home he would always direct his work. His final sickness lasted but 5 days and very quietly, and without a struggle, on Tuesday morning, Aug. 18, at 3 o'clock he passed away to be with his Lord and Savior. He attained the age of 69 years, 1 month, 3 days. He leaves to mourn his very sudden passing, 3 sons, Walter, Daniel, and Ulrich at home; 5 daughters: Mrs. Katharine Franz of Santa Monica, California, Ruth, Gertrude, Della, and Maria at home. Two brothers and their families, John and Chris of Lind; 2 sisters and their families, Mrs. Susan Neare of Lind, and Mrs. Mary Vogt of Philadelphia, Pa., and many other relatives and friends. Though his face will be seen no more in our midst, his service rendered will long be remembered.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Aug. 20, from the Precht Funeral home in Lind, and at 2 o'clock in the Menno Mennonite church. Interment was made in the Mennonite church near the church. Rev. M. J. Galle of Odessa, his pastor officiating.
