— Tobias C. Kaufman, one of the old settlers of the Freeman, S. D., community passed away at his home at Freeman on Jan. 16. One interesting incident reported from his eventful life was when he attempted to bring home a group of school children during the great blizzard in the year 1888. Leading the children for a short distance, he found that it would be impossible to reach home safely. he returned to the school where the teacher kept them as comfortable as possible through the night. Mr. Kaufman, however, went to his home, arriving there with a badly frozen face and hands. For many years he was a successful farmer. Funeral services were held at the South Mennonite church, Rev. P. R. Schroeder and Rev. J. J. A. Schrag officiating.
