Joseph H. Goering

Joseph H. Goering, son of Jacob and Katherine Reis-Goering, was born on October 29, 1857, in Waldheim, Russia. He was baptized upon the confession of his faith and taken up as a member in the Mennonite Church.

In the year 1874 he came with his parents to America. On April 20, 1880, he entered into holy wedlock with Mary Strausz with whom he was permitted to share the joys and sorrows of life for over 58 years. They spent these years on the farm near Moundridge, Kansas, until 9 months ago when she preceded him in death.

This union was blessed with 7 sons and 1 daughter, 2 sons dying in early infancy. He was very active all his life and busy until June 19 when he fell and broke his leg. He was taken to the Bethel hospital immediately and remained there for two months until hes departure on August 18, at 10:50 a. m.

He suffered patiently these last days of his earthly life even as he had always done. in the hours of severe pain he found refuge in prayer unto the Lord. He could say out of experience with the Psalmist: "The days of our years are three score years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away."

He attained an age of 81 years, 9 months and 18 days, and leaves to mourn his departure, 5 sons, 1 daughter, 2 daughters-in-law, 12 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 4 brothers, one sister, and many friends and relatives.

Burial services were held at the Eden church with Rev. Walter Gering and Rev. John C. Kaufman in charge.
