Joseph C. Goering

Joseph c. Goering, son of Christian and maria Stucky Goering was born on December 17, 1859, in the province Wolhynia, Poland, Russia. When he was six years old his father died, and geing [sic] the oldest son in the family he with the others experienced years of difficulties. On November 14, 1873, he was baptized and became a member of the Mennonite church. When the congregation immigrated into this country in 1874 and here named itself the Hoffnungsfeld Mennonite church, he retained his membership in this church until 1883 when he transferred his membership to the First Mennonite church of Christian, Moundridge, Kansas. Of this congregation he remained an active member the rest of his life.

It was in the fall of 1874 that he with many others came to this coutnry. The family settled in the vicinity of Moundridge, Kansas, and for the rest of his life he lived in and near this town. On June 25, 1882, he married Anna Wedel and together they toiled and the Lord blessed their labors so that they became prosperous. Over 52 years they journeyed together through this life. A little over two years ago they celebrated their golden wedding, on which occasion both of them voiced praises unto God for His manifold blessings. They considered the children the Lord had given them one of the greatest blessings. Fourteen children were born to them, 8 daughters and 6 sons. Two of the daughters died before the father.

The deceased was a successful farmer and business man, a friend of the needy and a liberal contributor to missions and benevolence.

For a number of years his health had been somewhat affected; for somewhat over a month he was severly [sic] sick. He passed away on Saturday December 1, 1934. His age was 74 years, 11 months and 14 days. he leaves his faithful wife, 6 sons, 25 grandchildren, one brother and many other relatives. Many friends also cherish his memory.

Funeral services were conducted from the First Mennonite church of Christian at Moundridge, Kansas on Tuesday, December 4. Rev. Phil. A. Wedel preached in the English and Rev. P. P. Wedel in the German.
