Joseph A. Goering, Sohn von Andreas und Freni Stucky Goering, wurde geboren den 15. Nov. 1863.

Joseph A. Goering

Joseph A. Goering, son of Andreas and Freni Stucky Goering, was born Nov. 15, 1863, in the province of Wohlynia Russia. In a family of eight children he was the last one to survive.

When he was 11 years old his mother died in Austria in November, the year of the great immigration to America. A few months later four of his sisters and one brother came to America. About three years after that the deceased at the age of 13 with his brother also ventured the journey to this country. When his father also arrived eight years later the family was again united with the exception of the oldest brother who remained in Europe.

On April 19, 1878, he was baptized and became a member of the Hopefield church. In 1935 he transferred his membership to the Eden church where he remained a member until his death. The deceased had the welfare of the church at heart and contributed what he could towards the upbuilding of the same.

On March 9, 1886, he was united in marriage with Mary Wedel. The Lord blessed them with a family of 10 children, 4 sons and 6 daughters. Six of these preceded him in death.

The family lived on a farm for 52 years. Five years they lived in town. One year in Moundrige [sic Moundridge] and 7 years in Pretty Prairie, Kansas. Nearly seven years ago this couple was privledged [sic] to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary.

Six years ago the deceased suffered a paralytic stroke, which made him seriously ill, but he recovered sufficiently that he was not solely dependent on others. On Sept. 17, 1942, he suffered another stroke and since then he was confined to his home.

On December 27 he suffered a third stroke which made him completely helpless. Although he never complained about pain it was noticeable that he suffered intensely the last three days. Finally on Tuesday evening, Jan. 12, at 6:15 the Lord took him home.

He leaves to mourn his deeply sorrowing wife, 1 son, 3 daughters, 1 daughter-in-law, 2 sons-in-law, 11 grandchildren, and 10 great grand children.l In his family five of his children died in early childhood. One daughter died as a mother of seven children, of which five are living.

His age at the time of death was 79 years, 1 month and 27 days.

Funeral services were held on Jan. 14 at the Eden Mennonite church, where words of comfort were spoken by the Rev. Walter Gering and Rev. P. P. Wedel. The Eden men's chorus and a male quartet rendered special music.
