— Friends here have received the report of the death of Grandmother Freni Goering and Mrs. Lillie Waltner Schrag at Moundridge last week. Funeral services for Mrs. Goering, who was 82 years of age, were held at the Eden church last Wednesday. Mrs. Schrag passed away Friday evening and interment took place at the Hoffnungsfeld church Sunday afternoon.

Mrs. Freni Goering

Freni (nee Krehbiel) Goering, daughter of John and Katharina Krehbiel and wife of John Goering, a former church deacon who preceded her in death over 11 years ago, was born Feb. 28, 1856, in Wolynian Russia, in the vicinity of Dubno and the village of Chortis.

The family soon migrated to Edwardsdorf and there the departed attended school and later also took catechetical instruction and was baptized upon confession of faith in her Redeemer on May 21, 1865. She was thus taken into the Mennonite Church whose faithful member she remained unto her death.

Early in the life of the departed, her mother was taken in death and since she was the oldest in the family many duties of a mother fell upon her.

On Sept. 12, 1872, she was united in holy wedlock to John Goering. In 1874, during the great immigration of Mennonites to America the family as well as her father's family came here to establish a home where there is freedom of religion. During this journey the youngest child of her father passed away and was buried in Peabody. With many other families also the family of the deceased made a home in McPherson county, Kansas, west of Moundridge , and through hard work and thrift they were able to make a comfortable living for their family.

Eight children were born to this union, and when the youngest sister of the departed passed to the Beyond, a little infant boy was left to her motherly care. Later her daughter (Marie) was taken in death and left to her a little infant girl which she then also took into her home for her motherly care. But it was taken in death from her at the age of nine months

When the man of God speaks of the life of man and says, "The days of our years are three-score years and ten and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet in their strength labor and serve." This can also be applied to her life. Many years ago a certain ailment attacked her which seemingly no medical attention could remove. But this was not to be the cause of her death. Old age and a light stroke of apoplexy together with pleurisy which finally developed into pneumonia, were too much for her body to resist, and her hour of redemption came May 21, at 6:30 o'clock. In the last years of her life she longed for her heavenly home. She expressed that repeatedly in conversation with her own, as well as in her prayers. She was a kind mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to us and with sorrow do we separate from her, yet we grant her that sweet peace in Jesus for which she had so earnestly longed. We look forward to meeting her again in the land where sorrow shall be no more.

The deceased reached the age of 82 years, 2 months and 33 days. She leaves to mourn her death 6 children, 2 sons and four daughters; 2 daughters-in-law, 3 sons-in-law; 56 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, one brother, 3 sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law. Two daughters, 2 sons-in-law, 7 grandchildren and one great-grandchild have preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held from the home of Gideon Stucky and from the Eden Church on Wednesday, May 24. Interment was made besides her husband in the Hoffnungsfeld cemetery.
