Joseph, son of Joseph and Anna Gering, born in Thetomirska Gouv, Dubroska, Russia, March 4th 1857 and died Nov. 8, 1924; age 67 yrs., 8 mo. 4 days. He was baptized by Rev. Jacob Stucky and united with the Mennonite church in Wolinien, Kotosufka, Russia in 1872 and remained faithful to his death.
He emigrated to the U.S.A. in 1874, residing with his father near Yankton, S. Dak. In 1890 he moved with his family to Dallas, Oregon, where they resided for 10 years. In 1900 the family moved again to Adams Co. Wash., 15 miles south of Odessa, where they resided 24 years, until his death.
He was married to Frances Ries, Oct. 23, 1880 and together they shared life’s joys and sorrows for 44 years and 15 days. To this union 13 children were born; 5 preceded the father in death, viz: Emilie, Haran, George, Jacob, and Carolina. Surviving him are a sorrowing widow and eight children, viz: Paul, Martin and Lena Schrag, of Monroe, Wm. Henry, Anna, Martha, Nellie, and Joseph of the Menno community. Twenty-two grandchildren are living.
Four of his sisters also survive him, viz: Mrs. Mary Graber of Odessa, Wash., Mrs. Katharina Schrag of Schrag, Wash., Mrs. Fanny Gering of Freeman, S. Dak., Mrs. Emilie Stucky of Pretty Prairie, Kans. Two sisters have preceded him: Elisabeth Graber and Carolina Gering.
He was sick nearly two years with abdominal cancer, and a large part of this time he suffered intense agonies, but bore his suffering with patience and Christian fortitude, altho for some time he has longed to go home to be with his Savior in whom he trusted to the end. Funeral was held Monday, Nov. 10 at the Mennonite church, D. D. King, assisted by Rev. Rhea, officiating.
