Henry Ewy

Henry Ewy, son of Peter and Katharina Ewy, was born in Galacia in Austria on February 20, 1870. In 1883, at the age of 13, he came with his parents to this country and they settled in Harvey County, Kansas. Here in the vicinity of Moundridge and Halstead he had his home for the rest of his life.

On May 1887 he was baptized and received as a member into the First Mennonite Church of Christian at Moundridge, Kansas. He remained a member of this congregation until December1908, when he took his letter to join the Garden Township Mennonite Church, and at the time of his death he was a member of this congregation.

He was united in marriage to Susanna Ortman on April 8, 1894. After they had lived together for almost 23 years death entered the home on February 7, 1917, and claimed the wife and mother. They were blessed with six children — three daughters and three sons. Of these one son died in infancy and one daughter, Mrs. Elisabeth Bachman passed away on October 28, 1918.

After being a widower for two years he again entered holy wedlock this time with Mathilda Unruh, who survives him. They were married on March 2, 1919.

Brother Ewy had been failing in health for a number of years; yet his death came somewhat unexpectedly when on Sunday morning, October 14, 1934, he suddenly passed away. He attained the age of 64 years, 7 months, and 24 days. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, two daughters, Mrs. John Friesen and Mrs. Dave Friesen, two sons, Peter and John, 9 grandchildren, 2 brothers and many other relatives, also many friends. To them his memory will be blessed.
