Carl J. Richert
Carl J. Richert, 77, 420 Old Main, a longtime Newton resident, died this morning, Feb. 14, at Bethel Deaconess Hospital.
Services will be conducted at 2 p. m. Wednesday in Petersen's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Washburn and the Rev. Henry Vogel co-officiating. Entombment will be in Greenwood Abbey.
He was born Oct. 6, 1904, near Goessel, the son of Jacob H. and Sara Quiring Richert. At the age of four, he moved with his parents to Newton where he attended Newton schools and was graduated from Bethel College in 1927. While in college, he was a football player, president of his senior class, editor of the yearbook and voted most popular student.
Mr. Richert was principal and coach at Preston High School for one year after which he returned to Newton and became associated with the Midland Mutual Fire Insurance Company for 40 years. He later became secretary-manager of the company. Following his retirement, he taught at Santa Fe Junior High School for three years.
Mr. Richert has served on the Newton School Board, board of directors of Bethel College and the board of directors of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies. He was active in the Kansas Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, serving as secretary and president several terms. He also was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a member of the Newton Rotary Club for more than 40 years and a member of the Newton Chamber of Commerce and Salvation Army board.
On Oct. 25, 1931, Carl J. Richert married Irene L. Urban in Newton. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include one daughter, Betty Lou of the home; and two nephews, Roland Ensz and Dr. John L. Nieman, whom the Richerts helped to raise.
Memorials have been established for the church and for the Rotary Foundation. Memorial gifts may be left with the staff at Petersen's Funeral Home.
