William Fred Brown

William Fred Brown, 71 year old citizen of 806 East Eighth passed away at the Axtell Christian hospital at 1:45 this morning, following a stroke several days ago. Mr. Brown underwent an operation for hernia early this week and apparently was doing nicely from this operation when he suffered a stroke, from which he rallied Thursday night but was taken worse Friday night.

Mr. Brown has been in transfer work in Newton for more than fifty years. He was born in Cambridge, England, March 16, 1863 a son of John and Sarah (Starling) Brown, making him 71 years, four months and five days at the time of death. He early showed his courage and independence when, at the age of 13 years he came across the Atlantic with some cousins, going to Canada where he lived about three years. At the age of 16 he came alone to Hiawatha, Kansas and shortly after to Newton where he has since remained. He was married on Oct. 22, 1885 in Newton to Mary Moore and to this union were born six children. They are Mrs. Mabel Boreham, Needles, Calif., and Mae, Charles, Harry, Earl and Harold of this city. He leaves two brothers and two sisters in England.

Mr. Brown was a devoted husband and father, a kindly neighbor, who talked little, but showed a sympathetic attitude for the sorrows of others and is a man whom his children may well revere, for making a living for himself at the early age of 13 and later for his family.

Funeral services will be held on Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Sprinker Mortuary, the Rev. Samuel W. Keller officiating. Mr. Brown will be at the Mortuary until after the hour of the service.
