In the summer of 1855 she came with her parents to America, locating near Franklin, Lee Co., Iowa. Here she grew up to young womanhood.

On September 17, 1865, she was baptized upon the confession of her faith by Rev. Christian Schowalter and joined the Zion Mennoite [sic] Church near Franklin, Iowa. In February 1868 she with her parents moved close to Dayton, Washington County, Iowa, there joining the Salem Mennonite Church, transferring her membership to the West Zion Mennonite Church in 1888, of which she remained an active and faithful member until the day of her death.

On April 28, 1878 she was united in marriage to Daniel E. Schmitt of Keota, Iowa. They located on their farm 1 3/4 miles east of Moundridge. To this union five children were born, all of whom are living. Her husband preceded her in death on April 12, 1915.
