Rev. Jacob Schartner

Rev. Jacob Schartner was born June 12, 1866, in Russia, Ostrog in the village Karlswalde. His mother died when he had reached the age of eight years. He emigrated to America with his father in the year 1874 and they settled down soon after this near Marion, So. Dak. The following year his father married again and he received anotehr good mother through this marriage.

He was baptized March 29, 1885, upon the confession of his faith by Elder Friedrich Schartner, his father, and became a member of the mennonite Church. He enterd the Holy bonds of matrimony Feb. 17, 1887, with Helena Unruh. They shared the joys and disappointments in married life for 53 years. To this union were born 14 children, 5 sons and 9 daughters, of which 2 sons and 2 daughters preceded him in death. Daughter Lydia was called to her heavenly home 8 months before his departure. Her death caused him great pain.
