Lucile Enz

Retired Purchasing agent and Office Manager of Bethel Deaconess Hospital and lifelong resident Lucile M. Enz, 65, died Tuesday (July 17, 1984) at her home at 15 Moorlands in Newton.

Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, July 20, 1984 at the First Mennonite Church with the Rev. Floyd Bartel officiating. Family graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Cemetery.

She was born Sept. 1, 1918 in Newton.

Organizations to which she belonged are the Sunflower Chapter of the Hospital Financial Management Association, American Hospital Association, the Christine Chapter of Professional Secretaries International (formerly the National Secretaries Association), Soroptimist International Club of Newton, the BDH Junior Women's Auxiliary and the Bethel College Women's Association. Miss Enz was the recipient of several special honors in recognition of her services as well as being named the Woman of the Year and the Business and Professional Woman of the Year in 1980. She also was a member of the First Mennonite Church.

Miss Enz is survived by her sister, Marjorie Jantz of Prairie Village.

In Memory of Lucile Enz

Lucile Enz, recently retired business office manager and purchasing agent, died at her home in rural Newton on July 17 following a lengthy illness. She was 65. Memorial services were on July 20 at the First Mennonite Church and burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.

Miss Enz was born Sept. 1, 1918, at BDH, the daughter of Paul and Margarethe Enz. She attended Newton schools and was a graduate of Bethel College. While a student she worked part time at BDH to assist with the organization and operation of the Family Hospitalization Plan, a forerunner of Kansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield. The day after graduation she began her full-time career at BDH which spanned almost 44 years. She officially retired on Dec. 31, 1983.

Her organizational memberships included the Sunflower Chapter of the Hospital Financial Management Association, American Hospital Association, the Christine Chapter of Professional Secretaries International, Soroptimist International Club of Newton, BDH Junior Women's Auxiliary and the Bethel College Women's Association. Special recognitions and honors included awards from the HFMA in 1970, 1973 and 1977, a Newton Woman of the Year and Business and Professional Woman of the Year in 1980.

A member of First Mennonite Church, Miss Enz was a member of the chancel choir and an assistant in the nursery department of the Sunday School for many years. She also used her professional accounting and secretarial skills in serving on a variety of church-related committees.

Survivors include a sister and her husband, Marjorie and Willard Jantz, Prairie Village, and a niece and two nephews.

Lucile Enz, a native Newtonian, passed away Tuesday, July 17, 1984, but she will be remembered by many as she led a full and active life during her 65 years. Lucile was born September 1, 1918, at Bethel Deaconess Hospital, the first child of Paul and Margarethe Enz. She graduated from Newton High School and Bethel College, and later attended, over a period of years, Wichita State University, where in 1967 received her master's degree in Business Administration.

Her entire working career of almost 44 years was spent at Bethel Hospital and Home for the Aged. In December, 1983 she retired as office manager and purchasing agent. In late January she was honored by a retirement recognition that included over 100 co-workers, former co-workers and members of the Soroptimist International Club of Newton.

Her capabilities and trustworthiness were recognized early in her career by Herman J. Andres, who was the administrator of the hospital. In January, 1948, he left the business affairs of the hospital in the hands of Lucile and Sister Lena Mae Smith while he was in South America for several months to assist in resettling of Uruguay Mennonites who were displaced persons from the Danzig area of Germany following World War II.

A part of her professional life also was devoted to the Sunflower Chapter of the Hospital Financial Management Association of which she was a charter member. She had served as the secretary and treasurer of the organization and received the William G. Follmer award in 1970, the Robert H. Reeves award in 1973 and the Frederick T. Muncie award in 1977 in recognition of her services to the chapter. Lucile also was a charter member of the personal membership section for purchasing agents of the American Hospital Association and a charter member and officer of the Christine Chapter of Professional Secretaries International.

A member of the Soroptimist International Club of Newton, Lucile was nominated by the club for a Newton Woman of the Year award, and was recognized as the Business and Professional Woman of the Year in 1980. She was a life member of both the Bethel Deaconess Hospital Junior Women's Auxiliary and of Bethel College Women's Association.

As a member of First Mennonite Church since 1934, Lucile put many of her professional talents to work in her church. Her musical talents and interests were evident by her many years of participation in the chancel choir. Many children experienced their first contact with church school in the Nursery and Cradle Roll department, where she assisted for over 40 years.

One of her great joys was to serve on the organ study committee and to see the organ installed in the early 70's.

Lucile's parents preceded her in death. She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Willard Jantz of Prairie Village; one niece, Margaret Gingerich and husband, Nelson; two nephews and their wives, Kurt & Susie Jantz, Wichita, and Keith & Lorry Jantz, Kansas City, MO: and 3 grand-nieces and 2 grand-nephews.

The ideals of the church and the Soroptimist Club to which she belonged represented the tenets of her life:
