He was born Aug. 13, 1912, in Boyd, Okla., to Jacob Peter Bartel and Emelia Kliewer Bartel. He married Edna Velma Janzen on May 5, 1937, in Newton. She survives. | |||
He was a retired farmer. He lived in Boyd, Okla., until 1918 and Turpin, Okla., until moving to Newton in 1976. He was a member of the Grace Hill Mennonite Church in rural Whitewater. | |||
Other survivors include two sons, Fred of Dodge City and Dean of Montgomery, Ala.; one daughter, Betty Frahm of Wichita; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. | |||
The funeral will be at 2 p. m. Friday at the Grace Hill Mennonite Church in rural Whitewater with the Rev. James Voth of the church officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. | |||

Ernest F. Bartel, 83, of Newton died Tuesday (March 19, 1996) at Presbyterian Manor.
