David R. Zook

David R. Zook, aged 87 years and 17 days, passed away at his home on East Main Street, Monday morning, May 11, after a lingering illness for the past several months. Mr. Zook was found dead on his cot in a downstairs room about 5:45 o'clock, by his son-in-law, John Nafziger, who resides in the same dwelling.

The deceased was a son of Major David Zook and Rebecca (Beller-Zook [sic Byler Zook] , and was born near Allensville on April 23, 1844. Mr. Zook and Malinda J. Plank were united in marriage by the late Pre. Sam'l Yoder on January 17, 1871. Their sixtieth wedding anniversary was celebrated this year.

After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Zook began farming on the farm of the former's father and were residents of this farm for ten years, after which they purchased the farm now occupied by their son Isaac, east of Belleville. they resided on this farm for twenty-eight years and in the spring of 1909 they retired from farming and purchased the Al Patton property on East Main Street, at which place Mr. Zook was called to the Great Beyond.

The deceased is survived by his widow, Malinda J., and one son, Isaac. Two daughters also survive, namely, Mrs. Nannie R. King of West Liberty, Ohio, and Mrs. John Nafzinger [sic Nafziger] who resides at the home of the deceased.

Funeral services were held from the late home on Wednesday morning, May 13, at ten o'clock. Rev. Eli H. Kanagy and Rev. Joshua B. Zook conducted the services. Rev. Kanagy chose as his text Job 14. Rev. Zook's text was taken from II. Cor. 5:21. Burial was made in the Allensville Mennonite Cemetery. It was requested by the deceased that no church services should be held at the time of his death and was also requested that a hymn be read after the services at the house. Both requests wee carried out and the hymn read was, "O, lord, Rock of Ages."

The pall bearers were J. C. Kanagy, S. W. W. Vanzant, J. A. Hostetler, I. Z. Hartzler, J. A. Hartzler and B. Harry Smucker.

This was one of the largest funerals held in the valley for some time.

Those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mrs. John R. King, of West Liberty, daughter of the deceased, and Mrs. Amos Hartzler, of West Liberty, a niece of the deceased. Mrs. King removed from the valley in 1919.
