Two drown in Virginia after buggy accident

DAYTON, Va. — Old Order Mennonites planned a somber service Sept. 24 to remember two of their own who drowned in a weather-related buggy accident Sept. 21.

John Zimmerman, 85, ad his 43-year-old daughter Kathy, who lived near Dayton, died when floodwaters from the Dry River swept away their horse-dawn buggy west of town. The two were trying to cross a bridge surrounded by high waters, the result of the remnants of Tropical Storm Isabel.

The elder Zimmerman was a stonemason for many years, said Lewis Martin, an Old Order Mennonite and owner of a saddle-making business.

"He was an excellent stonemason," said Martin, noting John Zimmerman's work on building retaining walls and fireplaces and improving existing buildings. "He had a really special touch in enhancing buildings."

John Zimmerman, who also farmed, had 14 children with his late wife, Lydia. Most of their children stayed in the area.

Kathy Zimmerman, who lived with her father, was loved by all and was everybody's friend, according to Martin.

The funeral was held at Riverdale Mennonite Church.
