Four Children Lose Lives When Home Is Destroyed by Fire

TRAGEDY AT MONROE, WASHINGTON CLAIMS ALL OF WM. ZERGER CHILDREN

Monroe, Wash. — This entire community was shocked and grief-stricken on Saturday evening, Sept 11, when the four children of the William Zerger family lost their lives in a fire which destroyed the Zerger home six miles east of here in Florence Acres community. The victims were Larry, seven years of age, Jimmy, five, Sharron [sic Sharon], three, and Kenneth, 18 months.

The parents had put the children to bed and left the home, intending to be gone only a short time. The fire was first discovered by a neighbor, J. R. McCrorey, who told authorities that when he arrived at the scene, the house was entirely enveloped in flames and one of the walls had just fallen in, so that it was impossible to attempt a rescue.

The grandfather of the children, Peter J. Zerger, who lives only a short distance away, noticed the glow in the sky about 8:45 o'clock but did not realize it was his son's home until later. The father had built the home only a few years ago.

Funeral services for the four children were held at the First Mennonite church of Monroe on Tuesday afternoon, Sept 14. Interment was made in the Memorial Park.
