JOHN W. WIENS

John W. Wiens was born Sep. 21, 1901 on a farm one-half mile south of Inman, Kan. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Wiens, the ninth child in a family of 14 children. Of his eight sisters and five brothers, eight have preceded him in death.

He grew up on the farm and was baptized June 3, 1917. His formal schooling included eight years at Inman grade school and four years at Zoar academy.

On Mar. 3, 1925 he was united in marriage with Anna Doerksen at the Bethel Mennonite Church where he continued as a member his entire life. Their marriage was enriched with one daughter and three sons. Frieda and her husband Milford Harder make their home in Inman,; Ernie, a school teacher, and wife Barbara live in Olathe; Wilber [sic Wilbur], a farmer, and wife Rita live west of Inman; and Edwin, a draftsman, and wife Twila live in Houston, Tex. The family has grown to include 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

After their marriage they lived for a short time on a farm southeast of Inman. They moved to Inman and continued to live there until he was taken to Mercy Hospital in Moundridge. After a brief stay, he was transferred to the Hutchinson Hospital and then to the Golden Plains Convalescent Home in Hutchinson. On May 25 he was called home by his creator.

He was the custodian at the grade school for many years and worked for a number of years for the Chase Grain Co. in Inman prior to his retirement in 1968.

He served as Sunday School superintendent, taught a Sunday School class of young boys and often taught a class of Wednesday Bible study. Singing in the men’s chorus was a joy for him. At home he would often play the organ. His love of God and his love for other people were strongly emphasized by his example in life.
