Community Leader Called in Death

Winkler, Man. — Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. H. Quiring Tuesday afternoon, July 8, at the Winkler Mennonite Brethren church for the late John J. Wiens, 55, son of the late Rev. J. G. Wiens and Mrs. Wiens. Interment was in the Winkler cemetery.

He died early Friday morning, July 4, at his home in Winkler after an illness of two months. During this time he visited Rochester, Minn. and Winnipeg in search of medical help.

He was born in South Russia Oct. 9, 1902 and spent 1904 to 1910 in India, where his parents served as missionaries with the Mennonite Brethren church. On Oct. 21, 1925 he married Miss Katie Froese, emigrating to Canada the following year. They settled in Winkler, where he received his high school education and also joined his father's garage business in 1927.

Mr. Wiens served Winkler as a councillor for eight years, frequently as deputy mayor, as a school trustee for six years, and as director of Bethel Hospital Society for 12 years. He served his congregation as Sunday School superintendent, delegate to conferences, and in various other capacities.

Out of respect and esteem for Mr. Wiens Winkler business premises were closed during the afternoon from 1:30 to 3:30.

He is survived by his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Nellye [sic Nelly] Smith and Mrs. Elvira Giesbrecht, both of Winnipeg; two sons, Alfred and Harold, both of Winkler, his mother, Mrs. J. G. Wiens and a host of friends.
