EDWARD EDIGER WIENS

Edward Ediger Wiens was born April 21, 1904, to John M. and Margaretha Ediger Wiens. Death came to him Oct. 6, 1972 at the age of 68 years.

His parents lived on a farm northwest of Inman, Kan. He went to country school near his home, but was unable to finish grade school since he was the oldest son and needed to help on the farm. The family attended the Bethel Mennonite Church near Inman. It was here that he was baptized on June 9, 1924, by Rev. Abraham Ratzlaff and became a member of the church.

On March 24, 1929, he married Martha Androes. This union ended after 40 years, upon her death May 5, 1969. To this union were born two sons and four daughters. Edward and Martha homesteaded near Texline, Texas, with his parents, brothers and sisters and other families of this area. Here the family endured many trials, but the close fellowship of the church group and faith in the Lord sustained them.

In 1935 crop failures caused by the Dust Bowl forced them back to Inman, where Ed became an auto mechanic. Now the family joined the Inman Mennonite Church as an active and involved family. Ed was a deacon for 20 years, and chairman of the building committee when the new sanctuary was completed in 1953. He spent much time in visitation of the sick and elderly, especially at the Pleasant View Home. He was active as a board member of the Pleasant View Home until his departure.

His days of retirement were happy ones. He married Ineze Nikkel on April 4, 1970, who brought him much joy.

Preceding him in death were his first wife, Martha, a daughter, Delores, grandson, Kerry Reed Wiens, and six sisters.

He leaves to mourn his wife Ineze; children, Wilbur and Margaret Wiens of Inman, Luella and Vernon Lohrentz of Freeman, S.D., Glenna and LeRoy Heidebrecht of McPherson, Eldon and Lila Jean Wiens of McPherson, and Doris and Gene Mengarelli of Kingman; step-children, Leland and Esther Nikkel of Inman, Delores and James Willems of Moundridge, and Ina Mae and Marvin Toews of Inman, brothers, Frank, Menno, Elmer and Levi, all of Inman; sisters, Mrs. Kathryn Friesen of Meade, Mrs. Susie Regier of Conway; 24 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
