MARY SARAH WIEBE

Mary Sarah Duerksen Wiebe, daughter of Abraham and Suzanna [sic Susanna] Duerksen, was born Jan. 13, 1895, in Washita County near Corn, Oklahoma. She was the third of nine children. She received her elementary education in Corn Valley School.

Mary accepted Christ as her Saviour on April 7, 19112, was baptized by Elder Henry Flaming and became a member of the Corn Mennonite Brethren Church.

On Dec. 24, 1915, she and Abe N. Wiebe were married in Cordell, Okla. In 1917 they moved their few belongings to a farm six miles northwest of old Rogerstown post office. Here four children were born to them, the eldest son dying in infancy. After moving twice to different farms, they bought the present homestead eight miles north of Waka (Texas?) in December 1929.

In 1930 Mary moved her church membership to the Mennonite church near Waka. In 1933 Freddie came to live in their home. In 1945 two little granddaughters came to make their home with the couple. One of the girls, Carol Ann, passed away in April 1962.

Mary and Abe were privileged to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary, at the same time that Abe's brother Herman Wiebe and wife celebrated their silver wedding anniversary, on Jan. 2, 1966.

April 11, 1967, Mary's life came to an end. She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband, Abe, of the home; two sons, Wallace of Alva, Okla. and Freddie of Anchorage, Alaska; two daughters, Mrs. Edgar Skidgel of Hardesty, Okla. and Mrs. Edward Copus of Oklahoma City; two brothers, Abe Duerksen of Bridgeport, Neb. and Dan E. Duerksen of Cheyenne, Wyoming; one brother-in-law, Bert Ramsey of Council Bluffs, Iowa; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
