Two Manitoba Truckers Killed in Ontario

Winkler, Man. — Word was received here that Cornie Elias, 36, and Abe Wiebe, 33, both truck drivers for Reimers Express and residents of the Winkler district, died in the wreckage of their tractor-trailer unit near Raith, Ontario on April 23.

They were driving the heavily loaded truck from Winnipeg to Port Arthur when it left the Trans-Canada Highway and plunged into a rocky gully.

Relatives of Mr. Elias who went to Port Arthur after the accident said an autopsy showed he had suffered a brain hemorrhage, causing him to lose control of the truck. He suffered a fractured skull in the accident. Mr. Wiebe, who was asleep in the cab, died of shock resulting from his injuries.
