Goshen, Ind. — Dan West, 77, founder and honorary chairman of Heifer Project, Inc. and the first layman elected moderator of the Church of the Brethren, died Jan. 7 at Goshen General Hospital. He had suffered from a rare throat disease for more than two years.
While serving as a relief worker in war-stricken Spain in the 1930s, Mr. West conceived the idea that Americans could send bred cattle to needy families overseas to supply them with fresh milk. As a result, Heifer Project was organized and the first shipment of cattle was sent to Puerto Rico in 1944. The program is now under Church World Service, and in 26 years some 40,000 food-producing animals have been sent to 85 countries.
Mr. West was a pioneer in peace training, youth work and camping in the Church of the Brethren. He was on the staff of the church's General Board from 1930 to 1959, and served as moderator in 1965-66.
A prayer service was conducted at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home here Saturday evening, followed by a memorial service on Sunday afternoon at the Manchester Church of the Brethren, North Manchester, Ind.
