He was converted and received into the Holdeman Mennonite church in 1896. The baptism was performed by J. F. Funk. On Oct. 8, 1899, he was united in marriage to Elnora Metzler, who survives him. Also surviving is one son, Maynard; four grandchildren; three brothers, Amos B. and Homer of Nappanee and Elmer of Wakarusa; one sister, Ruth, Mrs. Alvin Yoder, also of Nappanee.

He was ordained to the ministry of the home congregation on Dec. 8, 1908, by Bishop David Burkholder. He continued in this service until 1949 when ailing sight made it necessary for him to retire. However he occasionally preached entirely from memory when called upon. In his early ministry he served for a time on the local mission board and also served in the evangelistic field.

Funeral services were held on May 30 at the Olive church, with burial in the adjoining cemetery. The sermon was given by Bishop Lee Miller of Shipshewana from the text Psa. 91:1, 2. Bishop D. A. Yoder read Scripture, and S. G. Gingerich presided.
