Mrs. Lizzie Wedel

Lizzie (Nightengale) Wedel, daughter of Mr. and mrs. Jake Nightengale, was born in South Poland, Russia, in the province of Ostroy, on July 3, 1871, and went to her home in the Great Beyond at her Home in Hutchinson, Kansas, on January 14, 1940 at 11:340 p.m. Her age was 68 years, 6 months and 13 days.

She had been in ill health since June, 1938, when she suffered a stroke. In August of the same ear she had a second light stroke. Since that time her health has been failing and her suffering has been intense. Other complications set in. Dropsy, high blood pressure, and a bad heart were the immediate causes of her death.

She came to America in 1874, a child of four years, one of a large group of Mennonites who left Russia that year for these shores and located in the State of Kansas.

On Nov. 8, 1890, she was united in marriage with Peter C. Wedel, son of Carl and Eva Wedel. They made their home in McPherson county, Lonetree township, and continued to live there for many years. All but two years of their married life have been spent in Kansas. Since 1929 their home has been in Hutchinson.

Mrs. Wedel has ever been a hard worker, a faithful wife and a loving mother. She leaves to mourn her death her husband, 12 children, 32 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. There are also 3 sisters and 2 brothers who survive her. Three sisters and one brother preceded her in death.

The following children, all living, by her husband's former marriage, mourn her passing: Mrs. Dena Koehn of Plains, Kansas; Mrs. Katie Koehn of La Mar, Colo.; Hilkie Wedel of McPherson, Kansas; Anna Ratzlaff, Alice Reddinger, Mary Wedel, Rudolph Wedel, all of Hutchinson; Jake Wedel, Frieda Kroeker, Leslie Wedel, all of Los Angeles, Calif., John Wedel of Moundridge; and Pauline Wadell of Shelton, Washington.

Mrs. Wedel was one of 10 children. Her three living sisters are Mrs. Katie Thomas and Mrs. Eva Base of Chickasha, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Nettie Unruh of Galva, Kansas. Her two brothers are John Nightengale of Chickasha, Okla., and Abe Nightingale [sic Nightengale] of Missouri. Aside from these there are a host of friends and relatives who mourn her passing.

She joined the Emmanuel church north of Moundridge while still a girl and except for the time they lived at Plains, Kansas, has been a faithful and loyal member until her death.

Her faith in God remained steadfast to the very end, helping her to bear her suffering in a spirit of calm, submission. Now her days of suffering are over and we rejoice with her in life's new adventure with her Lord in the Spiritual Beyond.

Funeral services were held for Mrs. Peter Wedel on January 12, 1940.

In the morning at 10:00 o'clock a service was held at the family home in Hutchinson with Rev. Harry A. Diener in charge. Int he afternoon at 2:00 a service was held at the Immanuel [sic Emmanuel] Mennonite church north of Moundridge with Rev. John Ratzlaff and Rev. J. D. Schmidt n charge. burial took place in the Immanuel [sic Emmanuel] cemetery.
