text of obituary:

JACOB J. WEDEL, JR.

Jacob J. Wedel Jr., son of Jacob A. and Elizabeth Schmidt Wedel, was born December 31, 1900, at Meno, Oklahoma, His entire life was spent in and around Meno, except for a few short intervals when he lived temporarily in neighboring towns.

He earned his livelihood mostly as a laboring man, having worked for the Farmers Elevator at Meno for the past 14 years. He was always very conscientious and thorough in any task which he undertook. This quality won for him many friends in business.

On September 3, 1922, he was baptized upon the confession of his faith and received into the New Hopedale Mennonite church of Meno. Sometime later while a resident of Goltry, he transerred [sic] his membership to the Zoar Mennonite church of that city. Though never transferring his membership back he was an active communicant in the New Hopedale church for the past 25 years.

On September 15, 1923, he was united in marriage to Edna Johnson. The Lord blessed this home with two sons, Kenneth and Arnold. For more than 29 years Bro. and Sister Wedel were permitted to share the joys and sorrows that life brought to them.

Though he was never a strong, robust person, he enjoyed the blessing of good health most of his life. In recent years and especially in recent months it became apparent that his tenament [sic] of clay was beginning to fail. A rapid downward trend set in on New Year’s Day 1953, when he contracted a serious cold, and with other complications setting in he seemingly could not regain his strength. However, in recent weeks it became quite evident that his was more than just a passing illness, and as suspected, the doctor diagnosed it as an incureable [sic] cancer of the lungs.

He departed this life on Wednesday, February 25, 1953, at the age of 52 years, one month and 25 days. Those who will miss him most are: his wife, Edna, his two sons, Kenneth and wife Phyllis Wells Wedel, and their two daughters of Enid; and Arnold and wife Verda Pereboom Wedel, and their son of Oklahoma City.

In addition to these he leaves one brother, Ben Wedel of Ringwood, and six sisters, Ida, Mrs. Joe Jantz, Minnie, Mrs. J. B. Unruh, and Anna, Mrs. R. M. Koehn, all of Meno, Lena, Mrs. P. H. Jantz of Ringwoor[sic Ringwood], Elizabeth, Mrs. Sam Redger, and Lorraine, Mrs. Otis Schmidt, both of Greensburg, Kansas. Two sisters, Katie, Mrs. J. B. Eck, and Susie, Mrs. Jonas Jantz, preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, March 1, at the New Hopedale Mennonite church and cemetery, Meno, in charge of the pastor, Arnold Epp. Preceding these services, a brief service was held in the Henninger-Allen funeral home chapel in Enid by Rev. Albert Unruh. Rev. J. W. Bergen of Goltry conducted the graveside service. A men’s quartet rendered several songs.
