Jacob H. Wedel

Pawnee Rock, Kan., Dec. 20. — The news of the death of Jacob Wedel, last Wednesday caused sincere sorrow to the many friends and neighbors who had been very anxious over his condition for many weeks.

Jacob H. Wedel was born in Russia, Nov. 5, 1859, and died at his home north of Pawnee Rock, Kansas, Dec. 12, 1928, at the age of sixty-nine years, one month and seven days.

Both of his parents died in Russia, and when a boy fifteen years of age, he and his two younger sisters came to this country with their uncle, Dave Wedel. They settled near Great Bend where they lived for a number of years. From Great Bend Jacob went to Marion, Colorado where he resided until after his marriage. On May 10, 1890, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Anna Wedel, wife of his deceased cousin, and to this union two children were born, Noah Ernest, and Dorothy Alice.

Soon after their marriage they left Marion county, and Mr. and Mrs. Wedel with her four children, John, Susie, Lizzie and Minnie, by her former husband, came to Pawnee Rock. That was thirty-eight years ago, and they moved on the farm north of town, where Mr. Wedel lived until his death last week. Of the children, all survive except Susie who passed to the Great Beyond\, twenty-seven years ago.

Mr. Wedel became a member of the Mennonite church of Hillsboro, Kansas, in the year 1885, and upon moving to Pawnee Rock, he united with the Mennonite church north of town, and was an active member until ill health prevented him from attending. he held many offices in the church, being choir leader for years, and teaching singing school, as well as serving as instructor for the men's class in the Bible school.

Mr. Wedel had at the time of his death, fourteen grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Mennonite church, Sunday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted y Rev. J. B. Schmidt, pastor of the church, and interment was made in the cemetery there. — Pawnee Rock Herald.
