Mrs. Elisabeth Wedel

Mrs. Elisabeth Wedel, daughter of Henry and Catherine Nightingale Wedel, was born in Poland, Russia, September 16, 1867. She lost her parents in early childhood, and as an orphan came to America during the great immigration in 1874. She earned her living around Hillsboro, Kansas, where she was baptized on her faith in Christ Jesus by the Rev. William Ewert on March 14, 1883, and became a member of the Brudertal church of Hillsboro, Kansas.

September 25, 1889, she married Adam Johnson, who died November 26, 1908, sharing joy and sorrow with him for 19 years, and 2 months. They moved to Oklahoma shortly after this country was opened for settlement. She has made her home around Lahoma and Meno ever since.

She transferred her membership to the New Hopedale church and has been a member to the time of her death.

Children born in this wedlock are 10 daughters and 2 sons, 2 girls dying in infancy. The surviving children are the following: Susie (Mrs. Frank Eck), Lea (Mrs. Ben A. Koehn), Mary (Mrs. Dan Jantz), Anna (Mrs. Emmerson Unruh), Evelyn (Mrs. Cliffford Koehn), and Noah, all of Meno, Elizabeth (Mrs. Otis Jantz) Cherokee, Esther (Mrs. Albert Ratzlaff), Simon of Enid and Ida (Mrs. Elmer Eck) of Goltry. 65 grandchildren were born, five of whom died; also 6 grandchildren.

On November 22, 1911 she married Tobias J. Wedel, who died July 28, 1937, sharing with him joy and sorrow for 25 years and 8 months.

Besides the above names she leaves one sister, Mrs. Eva Fleming, DesMoines, New Mexico, 2 step-children, John and David Wedel of Goltry; Mary (Mrs. John Boese of Ringwood, Oklahoma,) and their 23 children and 9 grandchildren.

About 12 years ago she was operated for gallstones. While this operation was successful, her health began to fail during the last few years.

About two months ago she became seriously ill with a dikney trouble. Her suffering was so great, that finally she was operated but she did not survive this operation. Her desire was to be with Jesus, and was ready to go home.

Sunday morning, July 23, at 10 minutes past 10 o'clock, she breathed her last. Her age was 71 years, 10 months and 7 days.

"Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord."
