Former Art Teacher Dies in Freeman

Freeman, S. D.—Lena Waltner, 96, a longtime art teacher at Bethel College in North Newton, Kan., died May 19 at Freeman Hospital.

A native of Freeman, she was born Sept. 12, 1895, to Jacob and Freni Miller Waltner. She received her education at country schools and Freeman Academy. In 1923 she graduated from Bethel College, and in 1933 she received a master's degree in art from Colorado State Teachers College of Education in Greeley.

She taught at Redfield College, Freeman Academy, Yankton College and Sioux Falls College.

In 1934 she joined the faculty of Bethel College as the art teacher. She held that position, giving leadership to the art department, until her retirement in 1960.

Waltner was a member of the American Association of University Women, Western Art Association, Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, Bethel Reading Club, and the Kansas State Art Teachers' Association of which she served as president and editor of its official publication, Art Scoop.
