ELISABETH WALTER

Elisabeth Walter was born to Rev. John D. and Anna Gross Hofer on May 20, 1876, in Russia. She migrated to America with her parents and they made their home on a farm southeast of Emery, S. D.

Though educational opportunities were few she learned to read and write. She especially loved to read her Bible and read it through several times.

Upon the confession of her faith in Jesus Christ she was baptized by the late Rev. Paul Tschetter on April 3, 1898, and became a member of the Neu Hutterthal church and remained a faithful member until her death.

On Dec. 4, 1898, she was united in holy wedlock to Joseph J. Walter with whom she shared life’s joys and sorrows for over 59 years. In 1948 they were privileged to observe their golden wedding anniversary.

To this union two daughters, Mary, Mrs. David S. Hofer, and Anna, Mrs. Mike K. Hofer, were born.

On Sept. 16, 1958, she suffered stroke and entered the Freeman hospital. On March 4, after 24 weeks of hospitalization, she peacefully fell asleep to be with her Lord.

Besides her daughters she is survived by one son-in-law, David S. Hofer; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; one brother David of Emery; two sisters, Mrs. J. E. Kleinsasser of Huron and Mrs. Jacob F. Walter of Freeman. Her husband preceded her in death in 1958.
