DEACON OF AMISH CONGREGATION NEAR HUTCHINSON DIES

Hutchinson, Kan. — Funeral services for Peter Wagler, widely known deacon of the Amish settlement southwest of here, were held Aug. 23 at the Albert Yoder residence. His death on Aug. 20 at the age of 71 was due to a heart ailment.

The funeral was widely attended by relatives and friends who came from Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Oklahoma and Arizona as well as Kansas.

PETER WAGLER

Peter Wagler was born Nov. 17, 1885, near Montgomery, Ind., died Aug. 20, 1957, at his home near Partridge, Kansas, age 71 years, nine months, three days.

On February 16, 1911, he was married to Barbara Yoder of Nappanee, Ind. by her father, Bishop William Yoder. Surviving are his life's companion; five children, Laura, Mrs. David M. Miller of R. 1, Hutchinson, Kans., Raymond, Willie, Mahlon, and Orpha, Mrs. Harry L. Miller, all of Partridge, Kansas; and 18 grandchildren. Twin daughters, Mary and Martha, one son, and also one grand-daughter died in infancy. Also surviving are three sisters: Mrs. Hannah Overholt, Uniontown, Ohio; Amanda, Mrs. Edw. Hochstetler, Burr Oak, Mich.; and Lena, Mrs. Francis Miller, Fentress, Va.

In his youth he accepted Christ as his personal Saviour and became a member of the Amish Mennonite Church, being instructed and baptized by Bishop Eli J. Bontrager. In 1928 he was ordained as a deacon in the church, and as long as health permitted he served faithfully and cheerfully.

He was blessed with exceptionally good health until Jan. 16, 1956, when he suffered a heart attack. From this he only partially recovered, but at no time did he suffer much pain. At times he was again able to attend worship services, and last attended church services on July 7, 1957. On the day of his passing he ate a noon lunch, and then while resting on the bed he quietly passed away to be with the Lord. In the last few weeks on earth he oftened [sic] mentioned in his prayers the prayer of Stephen, recorded in Acts 7:59, ”Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”

Funeral services were held at the Albert Yoder residence on August 23, 1957, in charge of Bishop John D. Yoder, assisted by Min. David L. Miller and Bishop Val Headings, Jr. Burial was made in the West Center Amish Cemetery.
