PAUL DIRKS VOTH

Paul Dirks Voth, 87, died Sun- Sept 20, 1992 at home near Moundridge, Kan. Born June 12, 1905, near Gotebo, Okla., he was the eldest son of P. R. and Anna Dirks Voth.

He finished elementary education in Buhler, Kan., when his family moved in 1919. He graduated from Buhler High School in 1920. After completing one summer of college courses, he taught in a one-room rural school near Buhler.

Graduating from Bethel College, North Newton, Kan., in May 1929, he attended the Rocky Mountain Biological Station, Crested Butte, Colo. There his instructors recommended him to the University of Chicago where he earned his Master's degree. He married Selma Graber at Marion, S. D., on June 12, 1930. After teaching biology at Texas Tech for two years, he returned to graduate studies at the University of Chicago, receiving his doctorate in botany in 1933.

A temporary faculty position at Chicago became permanent. He rose to become professor, retiring as emeritus professor in 1970. He then began a second career as professor of biological sciences at Northern Illinois University for five years.

Academic honors include: Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, University of Chicago, 1940; and Distinguished Alumnus Award, Bethel College, May 1964.

He and his wife built a solar house near Moundridge in 1981. He was a member of Eden Mennonite Church, Moundridge.

Survivors: wife, Selma ("Sally"); daughters Felice A. and Clyde Goering of Moundridge, and Pamela R. and Alberg E. Dahlberg of Providence, R. I.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and brother Rudolf of Tacoma, Wash.
