Nursing Home Matron Dies in Winnipeg

MARIA VOGT WIDELY KNOWN FOR HER WORK IN NURSING FIELD

Steinbach, Man. — Miss Maria Vogt, matron of the large Bethania Mennonite Invalid Home north of Winnipeg, died at a Winnipeg hospital on Jan. 4.

Miss Vogt was widely known for her contributions in the nursing field. A native of Russia who received her nurses training in Russia and Germany, she came to Canada in 1923. In 1928 she founded Steinbach's first hospital with the assistance of her brother, A. A. Vogt and wife.

She also founded an invalid home here which was turned over to the Evangelical Mennonite Conference in 1941. She had served at the Bethania Home since then.

A woman of strong character and determination, Miss Vogt continued her work in spite of a heart condition which became serious during the last several weeks of her life. She entered the hospital only the evening before her death.
