German Industrialist, Conference Officer Called by Death

Emden, West Germany. — Mathieu van Delden, 77, prominent textile industrialist at Gronau and honorary board member of the German Mennonite Conference, died recently.

From 1952 until last summer he served as treasurer of the German Mennonite Conference. Since 1953 he had been president of the annual Northwest-German Mennonite Conference.

In 1950 he was selected chairman of the church council of the Gronau Mennonite Church. Last summer he was named honorary board member of the German Mennonite Conference.

Located on the Dutch German border 32 miles northwest of Munster, Gronau was the seat of an extensive MCC refugee program from 1946 to 1953. Some 1,000 refugees from Russia and several hundred from the Danzig area passed through this center on their way to Canada, Paraguay and Uruguay.
