MRS. JACOB A. UNRUH

Mary Klassen Unruh, was born Sept. 17, 1860, in the province of Michaleen, [sic Michelin] Russia. When the Mennonite migration from Russia took lace in 1874, she accompanied her parents to America, settling near Whitewater, Kansas. Here she, with her parents, brother and sisters, endured the privations of pioneer life.

Having accepted the Lord as her personal Saviour, she was baptized on confession of her faith by the Elder Johann Schroeder, and joined the fellowship of the Gnadenberg church near Whitewater.

On May 30, 1882, she was married to Jacob a. Unruh and for over 45 years unitedly shared the joys and sorrows of life. on July 23, 1927, her husband preceded her in death and she remained a widow for 19 years and 27 days.

Father and mother devoted most of their time to farming, the first few years at Pawnee Rock, Kansas, and later they moved to a farm north of Hillsboro where they made their home for 35 years. In 1916 they moved to the city of Hillsboro, where they spent the remainder of their lives. When they came to this community, mother joined the Johannsetal church with father and remained a faithful member to the end.

Mother enjoyed good health with the exception of frequent gallstone attacks. On the morning of August 19 she became ill with a heart attack, from which she seemingly recovered. However, the following morning, August 20, she was stricken with another heart attack which proved fatal. She reached the age of 85 years, 11 months, and three days.

She leaves to mourn her departure two sons, two daughters, two sons-in-law and two daughters-in-law: Mr. and Mrs. Jacob G. Bartel, Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Unruh, Dr. and Mrs. Wm. Goertzen of Newton, Mr. and Mrs. William Bartel, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Unrh; 15 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. John Gerbrand, Drake, Sask., Mrs. Jacob Pankratz, Hydro, Okla., Mrs. John Ratzlaff, Buhler, Kansas, Mrs. Nettie Pankratz, Las Vegas, N. Mex., one sister-in=-law, Mrs. Ratzlaff, and a host of relatives and friends. Her husband, son Ernest, a daughter, Minnie, and granddaughter, Inex May Unruh, preceded her in death.

To us the memory of mother will always be a blessed one. the power of her influence lay in her trust in her Lord Jesus Christ, and her intercessory prayers for her loved ones. She generously shared of her labors and her financial means for worthy causes. In adversity and suffering she was patient, looking to the Lord for help and comfort. She enjoyed many friends and has been an encouragement and strength to them.

The funeral was conducted by the pastor, Rev. J.M. Regier. We mourn her passing, yet are not without hope, for we know that we shall meet her again in eternal glory.

— Funeral services for Mrs. Jacob A. Unruh, 85, took place at the Johannestal church near Hillsboro last Friday with Rev. J. M. Regier, the pastor, in charge. Mrs. Unruh, mother of Mrs. W. S. Goertzen of Newton, died at Hillsboro on August 20. she was born September 17, 1860, in the province of Michaleen, Russia, coming to this country in 1874. Two sons and two daughters survive.
