Explosion in Illinois Plant Kills Workman

BLAST IN ULRICH PLANT, ROANOKE, BELIEVED CAUSED BY CLEANING FLUID

Metamora, Ill. — An explosion in the road machine manufacturing plant of the Ulrich Mfg. Co. in Roanoke of May 28 resulted in the death of one workman and undetermined damage to the building.

Alvin Ulrich, 52, who had been working at the plan about two weeks, suffered burns over most of his body and died five hours later. Two other workmen were injured one being blown through a door and the other overcome by smoke.

The blast apparently resulted when sparks from a welder's torch ignited cleaning trump. Windows were shattered, electric power was cut off and there was smoke and water damage, but machinery was said to be undamaged. Firemen extinguished a fire in the plant office.

Funeral services for Mr. Ulrich were held Saturday at the Calvary Mennonite Church in Washington. He leaves his wife, two daughters, one grandson, and 11 brothers and sisters.
