Tiny Tots In Drownings, Mower Accident; Boy on Bicycle Killed

As is all too common, a portion of the news reaching the Review this week was again punctuated with heartache and tragedy.

Tiny tots drowned . . a two-year-old injured in a mower accident . . . a lad crushed to death while riding his bicycle . . . other car and machinery calamities — all a part of our fast, mechanized age. . . .

Nappanee, Ind. — Funeral services for little Glenda Marie, two and one-half-year-old daughter of Mr.. and Mrs. Freeman N. Hershberger, were held July 24 at Maple Lawn Mennonite Church.

Glenda drowned Sunday afternoon, July 21, in a fish pond at the home of her grandparents, Harvey J. Hersbergers, near Bremen. Efforts to revive the child were too late when the tragedy was discovered.

Leola, Pa. — The lifeless body of nearly two-year-old Mahlon Dale, son of Mr. and Mrs. Amos K. King of Narvon, was found in the pond on the King farm about an hour after he had wandered away from the house.

There was not too much concern at first that the boy was not around since it was assumed he was with one of the parents. Mahlon was lying in about seven inches of water when found. The father tried mouth-to-mouth resuscitation but to no avail.

The parents, one sister, also both paternal and both maternal grandparents survive.

. . .

Plain City, Ohio. — Hit by a passing motorist near the driveway of his home, Nelson Troyer, 10, was almost instantly killed as he was returning home from an errand.

The parents are Mr. and Mrs. Abe N. Troyer.

Due to the trees and shrubbery, the driver of the approaching vehicle saw the boy too later to avoid the collision. Nelson was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Funeral services were held at the Canaan A. M. Church, conducted by Min. Noah E. Beachy and Bishop Eldon L. Troyer.

. . .

Billings, Mont. — Leonard P. Tieszen, 45, was fatally injured when the motor scooter he was riding was hit broadside by a fast-moving car.

Tieszen was on the way to work when he was struck by the car, which reportedly hadn't stopped for a red light.

He is survived by his wife, three sons and one daughter, and by his father, P. P. Tieszen of Mt. Lake, Minn.
