Retired Business Man, Civic Leader Dies

Goshen, Ind. — E. A. Troyer, 86, sell-known grocer and civic leader of the Middlebury community before his retirement in 1953, died at his Elkhart home May 14 after a six-month illness.

A native of Kokomo, ind., Mr. Troyer was postmaster and taught school at Fairview, Mich. before moving to Middlebury, where he operated the IGA store for 34 years. He served on the Middlebury school board and as president of the Middlbury town board.

Surviving in the immediate family are his second wife, the former Esther Hostetler; six sons, one stepson, one step-daughter, 20 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. two of his sons — Rev. Lowell Troyer of McKinley, Mich. and Rev. Lotus A. Troyer of Meadows, Ill. — are pastors of the Central District Mennonite Conference.

Also surviving are two brothers, Dr. Geo. D. Troyer of Aibonito, P. R., and Emmanuel of Kokomo, and one sister, Mrs. Mattie Hershberger of Kokomo.

Mr. Troyer was a member of the North Goshen Mennonite Church. Funeral services were held May 18 at the Lawrence St. Mennonite church in Middlebury.
