MARIE TOEWS

Marie Toews, oldest child of Abraham and Katherina Fehderau [sic Katharina Fehdrau] Toews, was to a farm southwest of Inman, where she had her public school training in the Sunrise School.

At the age of 19 she took catechism instruction under the pastor, Rev. Klaas Kroeker, and was baptized upon confession of faith in her Redeemer on May 13, 1917 and received into the fellowship of the Bethel Mennonite Church, whose faithful member she remained until death.

She experienced many trials and disappointments by the loss of health. At the age of 16 she had an attack of polio and was paralyzed from head to foot, except the right arm. Through much prayer and the help of the doctors she was restored to health again after being bedfast for about 11 weeks.

In 1928 Marie went to Chicago and attended the Moody Bible Institute, taking night classes. She worked during the day to earn her way through school and finished her course of study. In 1931 she returned home and continued to help in her parental home.

In 1952 and also in 1954 she had cataracts removed from her eyes, after which her eyesight was perfectly restored.

Marie was much interested in the spiritual things of life. She was an ardent worker in her church, being a Sunday school teacher for many years. She read her Bible faithfully and memorized many Scripture verses and hymns.

During her many trials and afflictions she kept her faith in the Lord Jesus whom she served faithfully, knowing that He will do all things well with her. In July 1959 her health began to fail and she was taken to the Bethesda Hospital. A year later she had two major operations, and again in February 1962 she had surgery when the doctors discovered that she had cancer of the liver.

Realizing her condition, she set her house in order, making ready to enter into eternal rest. Even with the best medical care, her life slowly ebbed away and she passed to her reward at the Bethesda Hospital at Goessel, Kansas on June 7, 1962, reaching the age of 63 years, four months and 25 days.

She leaves to mourn her death her 83-year-old mother, Mrs. Katherine Toews; two sisters, Sara, Mrs. Isaac C. Thiessen and husband and family of Buhler, Kansas, and Katherine, Mrs. Jake Enns, husband and family of Wichita, Kansas; four brothers, Aaron and wife Susan and family of Nickerson, Kansas, Abe and wife Tillie and family of Hutchinson, Kansas, Frank and wife Marietta of Newton, Kansas, and John and wife Katherine and family of Buhler; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary Toews; nieces and nephews; 13 great nieces and nephews; one aunt, Mrs. Lizzie Ediger of Dallas, Oregon, and one uncle, Frank H. Toews of Inman, Kansas. Two brothers and her father preceded her in death.

Funeral services were conducted in the Bethel Mennonite Church by the pastor, Rev. P. A. Wedel, who was assisted by Rev. P. T. Neufeld. Interment was made in the South Inman Cemetery.
